Set in Oregon during the Great Depression, the film follows battle-scarred veteran Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke), who is sent to a brutal work camp after being separated from his daughter. The warden (Russell Crowe) offers him early release in exchange for smuggling gold through 100 miles of wilderness. Murphy leads a group of prisoners on the mission while facing harsh conditions and local corruption.
