Chiara Sulprizio, principal senior lecturer in Classical and Mediterranean Studies at Vanderbilt University, leads a discussion of Homer’s Odyssey and its lasting influence. The program covers the poem’s authorship, structure, characters, and themes including homecoming, glory, cleverness, and hospitality, along with the roles of Penelope, Nausicaa, Calypso, and Circe. The discussion also examines Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation in relation to other versions, including Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Return, and considers their perspectives on love, war, and the human condition. Advance tickets are $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Admission at the door is $17, or $15 with a student ID.
