DECLARATION is a dance-theater work by New Dialect and poet Ciona Rouse that reimagines the American Declaration of Independence as a living document. Choreographer Banning Bouldin leads dancers through contemporary movement and theatrical invention, while Rouse’s original writing and live spoken-word score transform the historic text through erasure poetry. The work examines freedom, belonging, civic participation, and whose voices shape the shared story. Its use of revision considers how historical language can be engaged with in new ways.
